Charting Your Progress

One of the best ways to to stay on task and to encourage yourself to continue to move forward, is to keep a record of what you have achieved to date. It allows you to see your progress each step of the journey.
I am a fastidious list maker - I'm sometimes teased for it. People notice and remark about the copious "post-its" around my desk. They remind me of pressing deadlines I need to meet and I find siblime personal satisfaction in crossing off the tasks and tossing the no-longer-needed slips into the trash as I accomplish each handwritten, and yes, sometimes color-embellished edict they display. The ability to see progress can be invigorating and self-affirming for me.
So I'm providing you the opportunity to feel that same sense of "Yay, me!" by adding a listing to the left side of this page where you can keep a tally of the number of pieces you have made this summer.
Everything counts! Sketches, sketchfus published, written reflections and other entries saved in your journal, pieces you give away (make sure you photograph them for us to see) and of course full-blown pieces are all elligible to be counted.
Let me know where you are on your path and I will keep the blog updated. Of course, when you come back to school in August you better have "the goods" to back up your claims. :-}

Yay! I have two sketchfus (three if you count the revised one), One watercolor piece, and one comic.
The latest watercolor has been taking me longer because I keep adding in details. I just can't focus on one part for too long, it'll be good in the end though because theres so much to look at. ^^

Hey,Trish!
I have your tally at 5 and have that number listed by your name. I removed my name - I shouldn't count. (Although, right now we are tied! ;-p )
Here's a question: What do you think is going on with everybody? I wondered if maybe I am overwhelming them with too much enthusiasm.
Maybe it's just too ealy in the summer and people are taking time to enjoy their newly-found freedom. One thing I hoped to avoid is having people do all their work during the last week and coming back with stuff that was rushed and not thoughtfully made.
Maybe... some people are not comfortable with this form of communication. Maybe I'm a worry wart. :-) What do you think?
Anyway...I really appreciate your involvement and I hope you keep using it. If we're lucky, as the summer progresses more will join in.
If not, you have my word that I will keep checking in and giving you whatever encouragement and feedback you need to keep up the pace. In the end, I promise it will be worth your efforts!
Good work!

I don't think you're worrying too much. I think the problem is that some people are just not used to this type of communication. I made my first blog when I was ten and couldn't keep it up at all. Then I got my deviant account which has a journal on it so I got acclimated to writing about my art. I think people just have to get used to this.
Well, the only people I've really talked to have been Maria and Amanda. I know Amanda just started hers, which is the pop-up book. Maria works almost every day and is taking multiple summer courses so she hasn't been able to get any art in. But Maria is definitely keeping herself busy.
I think all my work is due to the fact that I can finally work on something other than realism. The weird part is this challenges me more, but I still like it better. One thing I have to say though is that all that realism is really helping when it comes to backgrounds and shading.
Oh, and I went to Barnes and Noble the other day and found some books on manga which I'm going to buy soon. So hopefully I'll be able to product some more mature looking comics soon. ^^

Thanks for checking back in and thanks for the objective feedback!

I supervised the ACT test at school this past Saturday morning and saw Chelsea, Krista and Meggie. They seemed to be having a good summer so far. Right after that test wasn't the best time to talk though - too hot and too long!
Anyway, it's too bad Maria is so busy during what might be considered some time off.
It's funny for me to think that I might be more computer savvy than a bunch of you all are, but I guess that could be it. On the other hand I wonder... don't they check their email often? I know I do, daily. Maybe as time goes by they will either get on because they feel curious or even guilty. Either reason is fine...JUST GET ON!!! LOL I know, calm down! lol
So having a chance to do your own work has energized you? That's good. I'm glad to hear it. I like the fact that you are so proactive for yourself and not afraid to get out there and see what's there for you. And the challenging part is what makes it worth the effort. I was at Barnes & Noble on Friday. I could have spent a fortune.
Yes we teach you realism for good reason. When you understand that, your abstraction, or manipulation becomes more believable. :-)
One more thing...don't abandon realism completely ok? You may still have to do some to get into a good program after high school.
Oh and, start thinking about where you want to apply. Start gathering information from those places as to their specific requirements for submitting a portfolio. Start building a folder of information. That will help you be more organized.

And, I have no doubt your work will continue to improve. You have the drive and self-motivation to make it happen. When you put in the time and effort, that just has to happen.
Keep in touch...TTYL :-}

Ahh no way! I was at the ACT too, with my boyfriend. Darn it, he wanted to see the art room and I told him nobody would be down there so we shouldn't even true.
Which floor were you on? I was on the third.
The email thing is because of a generation rift. We're more used to checking things like aim, facebook, or myspace messages so our email is just a background connection. I was wondering that same thing, because I always check my email when there's about 700+ messages and my parents never seem to have a problem with theirs. My boyfriend does insain stuff with computers, so I asked him, and that's how he explained it to me. If you have an iGoogle account it'll organize your emails according to who sent it and tell you any updates to sites you regularly check, that's the system I use.
I definitely think learning realism has made parts of my abstract much better. The faces are much better shaped, the don't look so flat anymore. My background work is doing MUCH better now.

How funny that we were in the same place and didn't know it! I was on the second floor in Mr. Geier's room 209. It was pretty darn toasty - no air!
Yeah I don't know if you could have gotten into the art room but the 1st floor WAS used for testing - just not that room.
Well... ok then for the blog. I understand what you are saying. It is a generational thing. Please don't abandon it though. I intend to keep it going.
I hope you did well on the test. Let me know when you finish your next piece. Also, if you need anything, just "holler".
